New Trade Topics / Services

Section A of CEFTA Chapter VI addresses the issue of trade in services among the CEFTA Parties.  It recognises that substantial potential exists to increase the level of trade in services and Article 27 commits the Parties to a progressive liberalisation and mutual opening of trade in services.  Article 29 provides for negotiations among the Parties to achieve a higher level of liberalisation – all in line with commitments taken under the WTO.  The opportunities presented by electronic commerce are also addressed in the Agreement where Article 28 highlights the Parties’ intention to increase use of this tool to increase trade.

A CEFTA Working Group on Liberalisation in Services has been established recently to determine a road map on the way forward.  In parallel to the work of this group, an EC funded project on the Potential for the Liberalisation of Trade in Services among CEFTA 2006 Parties commenced in April 2010 and two studies were completed in 2010.
